How to Customize Scooters

12. September 2025

Do you want a freestyle scooter that is exactly according to you? 🛴 No serial boredom, but a machine that you assemble from the best parts and make it an original that will suit you 100%. That's exactly what Custom Scooters are for.

In this article, we will show you why it makes sense to go for them, what you need, and most importantly, how to properly assemble your scooter step by step. We will also add tips from our riders and offer ready-made solutions from our e-shop.

Why choose a Custom Scooter instead of a factory setup?

Scooter setups are great for beginners – reasonable price, simplicity, and you can quickly head outside. However, as soon as you want to perform more tricks, have more secure landings, or suitable dimensions, you start hitting the limits.

A custom scooter gives you freedom:

  • you can choose the width and length of the deck according to your riding style,
  • you can adjust the height of the handlebars so your back doesn't hurt and you have ideal control,
  • you can choose the weight of the scooter depending on whether you want a lighter machine for tricks or a more robust one for bigger jumps,
  • you can design the scooter exactly how you like it.
  • Result? You have the original that fits you like a glove.

Here you can find our Custom scooters at an unbeatable price. In the category, you will find scooters for both the skatepark and the street: freestyle-scooters-affordable-custom-scooters/

If you do not take advantage of our Custom Scooters, which we have prepared for you at unbeatable prices, be sure to read the following lines carefully. Thanks to them, you will know what to watch out for when assembling your own scooter from scratch.

1. Selection of decks, riding style – street or park?

The first question you need to ask yourself: what style will you use the scooter for?

  • If you prefer a skatepark, choose a smaller and lighter deck – it will be more agile for tricks.
  • If you are attracted to street, it pays off to have a larger and wider deck – you will gain stability and comfort.

➡️ You can find decks for the skatepark HERE, and decks for the street HERE.

2. Selection of handlebars

Handlebars are absolutely crucial and mistakes are often made with them. Choose them according to:

  • height – ideally around the waist or navel (depending on what suits you),
  • material and compression system – always check for which system the handlebars are intended (IHC, HIC, SCS).

Material plays a crucial role. If you're looking for lightweight handlebars, go for aluminum or titanium. If you prefer strength, choose steel. However, be careful – titanium handlebars are not indestructible, they break just like the others. A simple rule applies: the lighter the handlebars, the shorter the lifespan.

👉 More about handlebars, choosing height, material can be found HERE.

3. Forks

The fork must match the chosen compression system for the handlebars.

  • Do you have handlebars for IHC? You need a fork for IHC.
  • If you have chosen handlebars for SCS, the fork must also correspond to SCS.
  • If you have chosen handlebars for HIC (oversize), then you must have a fork for HIC.

⚠️ Never combine different compr. systems!

⚠️ Important notice: When assembling the IHC fork, use exclusively the C-Ring that is included with the fork. The C-Ring provided with the headset is not intended for this installation and must not be used.

You can read more about types and materials of forks HERE.

More about compression systems HERE.

4. Clamp or SCS

The clamp or SCS must always match the outer diameter of the handlebars.

  • Some sockets have so-called shim, so they fit different types of handlebar diameters. (32 or 35 mm)
  • If you want to ride SCS, you need a SCS fork and bars without a notch!

Do you have handlebars with a notch? Use the bar adapter to turn them into notchless handlebars. If you don't have the bar adapter, you won't be able to tighten the handlebars properly, and they might come loose while riding. Also, keep in mind that the handlebars will be 3-5 cm higher due to the SCS clamp. So if you need a handlebar height of 700 mm, it's a good idea to buy handlebars with a height of 650 mm.

👉 Learn more about clamps HERE.

5. Headset (headset assembly)

This is simple – today, mainly integrated headsets are used. Just choose the one you like.

👉 More about headsets HERE.

6. Grips

Grips are about feel – they differ in hardness, thickness, and length.

  • For T-shaped handlebars, we recommend longer grips.
  • For Y handlebars, rather shorter grips.

You can buy grips HERE.

7. Griptape

Design is key here – choose what you like. The only important thing is correct application.

👉 A detailed guide on how to properly apply griptape can be found HERE.

8. Wheels

Choose wheels based on size and width.

  • The standard width is 24 mm – then you mainly deal with the size (110 mm, 120 mm).
  • For wider wheels and wheels for 12STD, always check that your fork and deck support them.
  • WARNING! Some wheels are sold in pairs (2 pieces) and some individually

👉 Learn more about wheels in the article HERE.

Tips from Our Riders

  • Handlebars – the ideal height is somewhere between the hips and the navel. Higher = more comfortable on the street, lower = better for tricks.
  • Weight – if you want to do a lot of jumping and tricks, choose lighter parts. If you skate street, a heavier but more solid setup doesn't bother you.
  • Bolt Check – get into the habit of always checking the scooter before riding. Five minutes of work will save you hours of nerves.

✅ And that's all! Now you know what to watch out for and how to properly choose individual components for your dream Custom Scooter.

Step-by-step Guide – How to Assemble a Freestyle Scooter

To get started with assembling, prepare the following:

  • necessary tools - ideally Allen keys, wrench 13, knife, square, deodorant.
  • Deck – the basic part of the scooter on which you stand. It determines stability, weight, and legroom.
  • Fork – connects the front wheel with the handlebars through the deck and holds everything together.
  • Headset – bearings that allow the handlebars to rotate freely. A quality headset means a smooth ride.
  • Handlebars (bars) – choose according to your height, fork compression system, and riding style.
  • Clamp or SCS (clamp) – connects the handlebars to the fork, can have 2–4 bolts for a more secure fixation.
  • Wheels – most commonly 110 or 120 mm. Larger wheels = faster ride, smaller wheels = better control.
  • Griptape – various widths and lengths
  • Grips (handgrips) – comfort and security when holding the handlebars.

👉 You can find all parts in the category Components for freestyle scooters.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: WHEN ASSEMBLING THE IHC FORK, USE ONLY THE C-RING THAT IS INCLUDED WITH THE FORK. THE C-RING PROVIDED WITH THE HEADSET IS NOT INTENDED FOR THIS INSTALLATION AND MUST NOT BE USED.
